Venezuelan First Lady’s Nephews Convicted of Drug Charges in US Court

US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agents simulate a raid in their Tactical Training Facility, part of the new National Clandestine Laboratory Training and Research Facility December 5, 2008 at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia. The jury was expected to appear briefly to say publicly to the court that this was the case, however, when the judge asked them if they had reached a verdict, a delegate from the jury said yes. In January, Flores, the wife of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, said her nephews had been “kidnapped” by the DEA for political reasons. After more than five hours of deliberation a court clerk told members of the media that the jury had not reached a verdict and they would resume deliberation on Monday morning. Two nephews of Venezuela’s first lady, Cilia Flores, have been convicted in US federal court for conspiring to smuggle more than 800 kilograms (1,763 pounds) of cocaine into the United States. Venezuelan officials have not yet commented on the verdict. The prosecution utilized the witness testimony, plus an array of evidence, to convince the jury that the defendants were guilty. No cocaine or cash was seized when the pair was arrested November 10, 2015. Instead, the prosecution relied heavily on communications over a multitude of media. One was an ex-DEA informant who conducted drug deals behind the agency’s back, and the other was a Honduran air traffic controller who facilitated drug shipments at the Roatán airport in Honduras. The pair’s defense
The defense attempted to cast doubt on both the weight of the evidence and the credibility of the witnesses throughout the trial. The flight never occurred, but the men were charged with conspiring to import five or more kilograms of cocaine into the United States. Judge Paul Crotty presided over the trial, which began November 7. DEA Special Agent Sandalio Gomez, who conducted the defendants’ post-arrest interview on an agency Learjet from Haiti to New York, used only hand-written notes to write down their statements, translating from Spanish to English as he wrote. Some of the more compelling evidence included a video recording of a meeting in Honduras that included two DEA informants and Flores de Freitas, in which they could be heard planning the logistics of a flight from the presidential hangar of the Caracas airport to Roatán in a private jet full of cocaine, which prosecutors alleged would have amounted to more than 800 kilograms of the illegal drug. The jury heard testimony from 14 witnesses including DEA agents, informants for the agency, a member of Haitian drug law enforcement, data analysts and translators. The evidence included photos, videos and messages from the defendants’ smartphones, as well as audio and video recordings obtained by DEA informants using hidden recording devices. Additionally, two of the witnesses came to court wearing prison uniforms, as they have been convicted for their own drug crimes. The tentative sentencing date is March 7, 2017.

Airstrikes Knock Out Hospitals in Rebel-Held Aleppo; None in Besieged Area Operating at Full Capacity: Officials

The UK-based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Saturday that some hospitals struck in recent airstrikes were out of service for a time but are now operating to some extent. The group said there were minor injuries to patients and staff at the M1 surgical hospital after artillery shelling and airstrikes that caused major fires Friday. On Saturday, at least 38 civilians were killed by the extensive bombardment of eastern Aleppo, according to the Syrian Civil Defense, a volunteer group also known as the White Helmets. Another man who seems to be a doctor says the hospital was bombarded, and there has been a direct hit on the intensive care unit, which he says was full of patients, “(especially) those who were transferred from hospitals that have been struck today morning and yesterday evening.”
He says staff have had to transfer patients to other hospitals when they don’t even know if they are operational, adding “the material damage is so huge in the hospital, unbelievable horror among patients and the medical staff, the ambulances outside can’t rescue patients, people can’t rescue each other, people are afraid of coming to the hospitals.”
The humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders condemned the airstrikes, saying entire hospitals, electric generators, emergency rooms and wards have been destroyed in eastern Aleppo in more than 30 attacks since July. Days of heavy airstrikes have left Syria’s rebel-held eastern Aleppo without a single hospital operating at full capacity, the Syrian American Medical Society told CNN on Saturday.
